Romero Names New Spurs Captain Following Son’s Departure

Thomas Frank has officially named Christian Romero as the new captain of Tottenham Hotspur following Heung Min’s transfer to LAFC this summer.

Heung Min has captained the team for the last two seasons, famously lifting the Europa League trophy in May, breaking a 17-year drought for honors.

With Heung Min moving to MLS earlier this month, Frank has sought a new leader for the squad.

Romero, who contributed to two Copa America victories at the World Cup, served as vice captain alongside James Madison during Angipost Kogle’s two-year tenure in North London.

He becomes Tottenham’s third captain in the past decade, following Hugo Lloris, who held the position for eight years from 2015 to 2023.

Tottenham is set to face Paris Saint-Germain in the UEFA Super Cup in Udine, Italy, on Wednesday before beginning their Premier League campaign against Burnley on Saturday.

“I had a productive conversation with Katy Romero, and he will be our captain,” Frank remarked in a statement.

“He is both honored and thrilled to take on this significant role and lead such a prestigious club.”

“Romero possesses all the essential qualities of a leader; he inspires his teammates on the pitch and drives them forward even off it.”

“I also envision a leadership group. While Romero will wear the captain’s armband, I aim for multiple leaders—about four or five—within our leadership structure.”

Romero joined Spurs from Serie A’s Atalanta in 2021 and has made exactly 100 appearances in the Premier League.

He played a crucial role in the Europa League final, helping secure a 1-0 victory over Manchester United, and was instrumental in the semi-finals and quarter-finals against Bodo/Glimt and Eintracht Frankfurt, respectively.

Last season, he was named captain in the starting lineup 13 times by Post Cogroy.

At 27 years old and amidst rumors of a summer transfer, Romero is set to be a key figure in Frank’s first season at the helm.

Frank confirmed that he would announce the rest of the Tottenham leadership group after the transfer window closes.

Information from the PA contributed to this report.

Fan Take: This news is significant for soccer enthusiasts as it marks a pivotal moment for Tottenham in redefining their leadership structure post-Heung Min. Romero’s appointment could signal a shift in team dynamics, potentially leading Spurs toward greater achievements this season.
