EA Sports has unveiled the first detailed gameplay trailer for NHL 26, offering a five-minute overview that highlights ICE-Q 2.0, enhancements to the X-Factor system, and updates to the goalkeeper crease control mechanics. The game introduces 80 new goalie animations, enabling faster and more precise reactions; goalkeepers now use their sticks more effectively and defend more tightly, with the ability to break free from animations to react instantly to chips, rebounds, and plays.

The gameplay trailer notes improvements in goalie performance based on size, giving smaller goalies an edge compared to previous versions. Specific moves, such as the forehand-backhand Deke and cross-crease passes, which previously disrupted goaltending, have been corrected. The revamped X-Factor system currently features 28 unique abilities across five categories, with three levels of impact and new visual indicators to show when and where X-Factors activate on the ice, enhancing player feedback compared to NHL 25.

ICE-Q 2.0 incorporates real NHL edge data to influence player AI, attributes, and decision-making, with examples like Alex Ovechkin’s tendency to position off the circle during faceoffs and Leon Draisaitl’s shooting style from the crease. These additions promise to make AI behavior more realistic during gameplay. The community update also fixes issues such as the Vision Control LT/L2 glitch, adjusts hip checks, and rebalances reverse hits, addressing some of the exploited mechanics from NHL 25.

Fans can look forward to exploring all these gameplay improvements when NHL 26 launches on September 12, with early access for Deluxe Edition pre-orders on September 5. The game will also introduce new heroes and icons for players to enjoy. For ongoing NHL game updates, fans can follow the Hockey News gaming site or their Google News Feed.

Fan Take: This update is exciting for hockey fans as it promises a more authentic and fluid gameplay experience, especially with smarter AI and enhanced goalie mechanics. NHL 26 could significantly elevate the sport’s virtual representation, making every match feel more strategic and true to real hockey.
