Broncos LB Nik Bonitto Sits Out Practice, Battling Bone Spur Issue

ENGLEWOOD, CO – Denver Broncos linebacker Nick Bonitt has not participated in practice this week following surgery to remove a bone spur from his leg. Broncos head coach Sean Payton confirmed on Thursday that Bonitt underwent the procedure during a joint session with the Arizona Cardinals and has been sidelined from training camp practices for the past three days.

Payton explained, “He had a bone spur on the top of his leg… We expected him to miss this week. He’ll return next week.” There had been some speculation that Bonitt’s absence might be linked to contract negotiations, as the All-Pro second-team linebacker, who ranked third in the league with 13.5 sacks last season, is set to become an unrestricted free agent in March. However, Bonitt was actively participating in offseason workouts and training camp until this recent setback. He even featured in the Broncos’ preseason opener against the San Francisco 49ers, recording a sack and disrupting a series in a 30-9 win.

When asked if Bonitt’s absence was purely injury-related, Payton confirmed the surgery and praised Bonitt’s attitude, stating, “He’s been great… It’s a minor procedure, about three stitches. The goal is for him to return to practice and play in the preseason finale in New Orleans next week.”

Bonitt, the Broncos’ second-round pick in 2022 (64th overall), achieved career highs last season with 48 tackles, 13.5 sacks, and 24 quarterback hits. Since training camp began, the Broncos have also welcomed roster additions such as wide receiver Cortland Sutton and defensive player Zac Allen. Payton noted that contract talks with Bonitt are ongoing.

Additionally, tackle Garrett Boles missed practice on Thursday due to an asthma attack, and tight end Nate Adkins underwent a minor procedure to repair ankle damage, sidelining him for several weeks.

Fan Take: This update on Nick Bonitt is crucial for NFL fans because it highlights the physical challenges that top defensive players often endure, potentially impacting team dynamics and performance. If Bonitt recovers well, his return could reinforce the Broncos’ defense, making them a stronger contender this season and intensifying competition in the league.
