Rooney Responds: Brady’s Take on Work Ethic Was “Unjust”

Wayne Rooney, the former Mayor of Birmingham, has responded to Tom Brady’s remarks about his work ethic, calling them “unfair.”

In a recent Amazon Prime documentary focused on Birmingham, Brady, who is also a part-owner of the club, expressed concerns over Rooney’s commitment, saying, “I’m worried about (Rooney’s) work ethic.”

Rooney took on the role of Birmingham Manager in October 2023 but was dismissed in January 2024 due to disappointing results.

During the documentary, Brady observed Rooney’s first meeting with the players and raised concerns about the coach’s approach afterward.

Rooney noted on his BBC podcast, “The Wayne Rooney Show,” that Brady’s visit occurred just a day before a game, implying that the timing may have affected Brady’s understanding of football dynamics. “What he’s good at is being hardworking, and we all recognize that,” Rooney added.

Brady, a seven-time Super Bowl champion, became a minority owner of Birmingham in August 2023 after the club was acquired by Nighthead Capital Management LLC and financier Tom Wagner.

“Soccer isn’t like the NFL, where you only play for three months a year,” Rooney argued. “He’s being quite harsh, as players also need their rest.”

Rooney, a former England international and Manchester United star, succeeded John Eustace, who was let go in hopes of propelling Birmingham back to the Premier League.

Ultimately, the team experienced relegation to League One by the season’s end.

“I have immense respect for Tom Brady,” Rooney remarked. “He is arguably the greatest athlete of all time, and it appears Birmingham is starting to feel that impact.”
