Chula Vista, California – Anica Sorenstam shot a 3-under 70 on Thursday to take the first round lead at the US Senior Women’s Open at the San Diego Country Club.

Sorenstam won the tournament in 2021 after winning the US Women’s Open titles in 1995, ’96 and 2006. The 54-year-old Swede has won the LPGA Tour 72 times.

“I’m very pleased with the first round,” Sorenstam said. “I felt it was pretty solid from the tee to the green. I think it was a few good approach shots on the right side of the flag, which is very useful on this course.”

Moira Dan Balls suffered a stroke between amateur Lara Tennant and 72-year-old Barb Moxness. 2023 champion Trish Johnson was another stroke back to 72 with Corina Kelepouris.

Karrie Webb scored 73 in his first career round at the event.

“All the nerves and anxiety were definitely there. It’s a kind of course you don’t know if you’ll really feel comfortable,” said Webb, 50.

Juli Inkster had 75. She made a 50-foot Eagle Putt in her first hole, par 5 10th place.
