The No. 6 seed of the US, the Madison Keys, were upset by the world’s No. 82 Renata Zarazúa 6-7 (10), 7-6 (3), and 7-5 in the first round of the US on Monday.

Zarazua became the first Mexican player to knock off a top 10 seed in the majors since Angarika Gabaldon, who defeated third-seeded Janano Botna in the 16th round at the 1995 Australia Open.

Before the Keys, the last American woman to seed in the top 10 after losing in the first round at the Flushing Meadows was Maria Bent Kabuchi, No. 8 Chandalubin in 2003. It is the only other example of what has happened in the New York Tournament over the past 30 years.

Key created a forced error of 89 in the match and had 14 double failures.

The result of other women’s singles on Monday was that two-time leading champion Barbora Krejcikova defeated 18-year-old Canadian Victoria M Boko.

Krejcikova is not seeded in Flushing Meadows. It was not seeded in the slam for the first time since the French opening in 2021.

Also on Monday, Belgian No. 19 seed Elise Mertens beat American Alyssa Anne 6-1, 6-0, while No. 17 Seadrewdmira Samsonova passed ex Yuan Yue 2-6, 6-4, 6-4.

Wimbledon two-time champion Petra Kvitova was beaten 6-1, 6-0 by Frenchman Diane Parry in Kvitova’s final tournament before resignation

ESPN research contributed to this report.
