Sergio Garcia is taking a break after missing out on this year’s Ryder Cup team.

Garcia withdrew from the Irish Open on Monday shortly after receiving a call later this month that he was not part of the European team at the Ryder Cup. Garcia was the European team’s greatest point leader ever at the event and was part of every tournament dating back to 1999.

The decision not to play at this week’s DP World Tour event came as Garcia said he was “not engaged entirely.”

“I felt like I was really looking forward to being part of that team, so it felt like it was a bit tough mentally, mentally,” Garcia told Golf Magic.

Garcia then flies to New York to hold a US tennis tournament. He is actually planning to play golf with Spanies Carlos Alcaraz on Wednesday ahead of Alcaraz’s semi-final match at the Grand Slam later this week.

Garcia won the PGA Tour 11 times for his career. The most notable is the 2017 Masters. Since then, he has moved to Liv golf and has struggled throughout the season. He missed a cut at the Masters in April and finished T34 at the British Open in July. Garcia is currently at No. 399 in the official world golf rankings. This is because LIV golf events still do not accumulate points on stage around the world. He won the LIV golf tournament in Hong Kong in March, but he only made one top-10 finish in his final eight starts on the circuit.

Garcia was one of the big names he plans to perform at the Irish Open this week. Rory McIlroy, Shane Lowry, Patrick Reed and Tyrrell Hatton are also on the field.

Donald made six captain picks on Monday. He brought in Laurie, John Lahm, Sepp Straka, Victor Hofland, Rudig Åberg and Matt Fitzpatrick. McIlroy, Robert Macintyre, Tommy Fleetwood, Justin Rose, Rasmus Højgaard and Hatton were already qualified. United States Captain Kiegan Bradley made a captain pick last week.

“The call with Luke was fine, but it was clearly not the one I wanted, but the conversation was fine,” Garcia said. “The only thing I can do now is support the team from home. It’s just as easy. I’ll watch and cheer on the team in Europe.”

The Ryder Cup will begin on September 26th from Beth Page Black in New York.
