Leeds United Managing Director Robbie Evans has made it clear that young striker Mateo Joseph’s summer loan to Mallorca is essential to his development.

However, he made it clear that the club would never consider inserting a purchase option into the deal. According to Evans, several teams expressed interest in Joseph, each asking for an option to buy, but Leeds refused.

“He needed minutes and part of the reason I wondered why he was on loan was that all the teams that were taking him on loan were demanding buy options,” Evans was quoted as saying by the BBC.

“We simply said there’s no way for this player to get options.

“Our hope is that he has an incredible season in Mallorca and will return.

“He’s a favorite of the club and the president, so I hope he’s great.”

Joseph’s departure continued in a turbulent preseason, during which tensions began with Leeds manager Daniel Fark. The striker reportedly was unhappy with what was perceived as a lack of support from the German coach and chose not to re-enter training with the club.

Whether or not the return will be smooth can depend heavily on Fark’s position. If the manager stays on Elland Road, a player-coach settlement is important.

Leeds points out Jack Harrison’s reintegration this summer as evidence of Fark’s willingness to correct the relationship, hoping that the same thing happens with Joseph. Until then, his progress in Spain will be closely monitored.
