Champaign – Descending to the hot start had to be what Teutopolis senior Golfer Coen Pennington had in mind.

And how he plays now.

Throughout the four 18-hole rounds this year, Pennington averages scores at 71.7. This included a career day at the John Masek Invitational in Champaign (Centennial), where he fired 69 at the University of Illinois Blue Course in Savoy. Pennington sank the Eagle Putt on the 18th hole and put his name in a history book.

The round marked the school’s record set by Christian Detelles, a 2017 graduate. Detelles played for four years at Webster University.

Coach Mike Wilson noted that Pennington took on a leadership role this year.

The wooden shoes finished second in the tournament, firing a team score of 297. They were five shots behind St. Anthony in the first place.

Isaac Weber fired 73. Cade Pennington shot a 77 and Owen Kremer shot a 78.

The scores that were not counted in the team total were 81 by Matthew Harving and 85 by Landin Torre.

Bulldog freshman Logan Gowin shot the final round of 70, tied it together second individually.

“He definitely got his product with a whole grasp of the game of golf and what you need to do,” St. coach Phil Zachari said. “He’s going beyond his age.”

Drake Brown shot 73. Alec Hackman shot a 74 and Madducks Clark shot a 75.

The scores that were not counted were Briggs-Whitley’s 78 and James Trupiano’s 83.

“It was a good victory,” Zachari said. “It showed we were heading in the right direction. We had some better scores and they were working on what they wanted to clean out of (Macomb).”

Effingham finished fourth with a 308.

Jack Swinger shot the final round of 75, tied it individually to 10th place.

“Jack started with nine and played for Wonder Per Sae for the rest,” coach Jeff Schaefer said. “He hangs out there and does an amazing job.”

Leo Wyckoff also shot a 75, while Jude Traub and Cannon Bockhorn each shot a 79.

The scores not counted were 82 by Brody Boehm and 93 by Allyn Koester.

Altamont was the final area team to participate in, finishing 13th with a 366.

Evan Elam is a low Indian individual, earning 86.

“He started off with a bogey, he started with a double bogey and then had some pars, and he managed to settle it down,” coach Rob Zumaren said. “I know before, he told me his goal was to play “bogey golf,” which is typical for him, but he went outside and filmed better.

“He’s come a really long way since last year.”

Mason Schaub shot 90, while Harrison Rush and Kamlyn Wolfert each shot 95.

The scores that were not counted were Henry Nearman’s 102 and Hunter Grovenjiser’s 106.

Below are other boys’ golf results from around the area from August 25th to August 30th.

In Edwardsville… St. Anthony finished fifth at the Edwardsville Dick Gerber Invitational, held on August 29th and August 30th.

The Bulldogs played Timberlakes Golf Course on Friday, earning a 303.

Gowin shot the final round of 68. Clark shot 75.

The scores not counted were 85 for Brown and 88 for Hakman.

St. A played Berg Park Golf Course on Saturday and shot 302.
