Why did Orlando Magic trade four unprotected first round picks for Desmond Bain?

With the 2025 NBA Draft being nine days apart, trading around the league is intensifying. Over the weekend, the Orlando Magic and the Memphis Grizzlies made a shocking deal.

Magic sent four unprotected first-round picks, first-round picks, a first-round pick swap, a Kentavia Scaldwell Pope and Cole Anthony to the Grizzlies. In exchange they got Desmond Bain. Team president Jeff Weltman said the team is offensive with their winning approach this offseason. The deal helps Weltman defend his words with fans who doubted the magical trajectory.

On a contract with Grizzlies, The Magic sent Memphis the 16th pick in the 2025 NBA Draft, the 2026 first round pick, the 2028 first round pick, the 2030 first round pick, and the 2029 first round pick, the 2029 first round pick (top 2 protected top 2). Additionally, they traded Caldwell Pope and Cole Anthony from the Kentavius. In exchange for that transport, Magic soon acquired 27-year-old Desmond Bain.

He was the 30th pick in the 2020 draft by Memphis at TCU. Bane played 313 games and made 261 starts. Since the 2021-22 season, Bain has been a full-time starter for the Grizzlies. In 2024-25, Bain played in 69 of the Grizzlies’ 82 games. The talented SG averaged 19.2 points, 6.1 rebounds, 5.3 assists and 1.2 steals per game. Bane shot an exceptional .392% over the ARC last season. In catch-and-shoot, Bane shot .432% in the last five seasons, the third-best rating on at least 1,000 attempts.

Last season, the Orlando Magic shot .315% over the arc. The team’s lowest 3-point field goal percentage since the 2015-16 Lakers. By adding Desmond Bane, Magic improves accuracy by 3 points. Bain joins Paolo Banchelo and Franz Wagner, who have established roles on the team. Additionally, Desmond Bain has signed contracts throughout the 2028-29 season. How will he fit magic in 2025-26?
