Gary Neville loves to make fun of himself when it comes to Liverpool’s predictions, and what he retreated in 2023 remains one of his worst.
Neville is consistently wrong about Liverpool
Over the past decade or so, Neville has become one of the most prominent experts in the game, often enough of a sense, unless it concerns Liverpool or Manchester United.
Too often, the previous right-back allows his heart to dominate his head, predicting United will finish in the top four, or insisting that his club will finish on the red in the season, despite his club offering little material to back it up.
For example, in the summer of 2019, Neville said that Mohamed Sarah would definitely leave Liverpool the following year — he said he was still a Reds player in 2025 — and that United would win the Premier League title before their rivals.
“Sarah leaves, he can absolutely assure him. I can see it, you can feel it, you can smell it, you know it.
“Liverpool, City, Tottenham – all of these clubs have had poor recruitment policies from time to time over the last 25-30 years, so United are experiencing one at this point. In the end they stumble on the right recruitment system, people with the right recruitment. They get great managers.
“It’s going to happen. We can guarantee that Demanchester United is as clear as they win again. They’ll get the problem again. They’ll win the league, and in my opinion they’ll probably win the league before Liverpool.
Neville’s shocking Liverpool forecast is back in 2023
In 2023, Man Utd visited Liverpool in a better way on both sides. Jurgenklopp’s team struggles for a variety of reasons, especially as Fabinho and Jordan Henderson were the shadows of their former self.
Speaking about Sky Sports before the game, Neville barely entertained the idea of defeat, saying that the Red Devils, who won at Anfield, were totally faithful.
“I’m not nervous. I’ve never been more relaxed than ever before as a Manchester United fan in the last nine years. Honestly, this bunch is tough.”
Instead, Liverpool wiped United out 7-0 at Anfield. Eric Ten Hag’s side surrendered in the second half.
