Luke Donald claims that Bethpage Black’s American fans can attract Team USA players.
“That could happen,” Donald told the British media when asked if the atmosphere in Farmingdale, New York would become sour. “We all know how expensive tickets are and it’s going to be an expensive trip for a family of four. If a US player is paid or whatever it is, or if they’re not playing, New Yorkers can let them know.”
Team USA players and captains will receive $500,000 this week. Of that, $300,000 will need to be donated to the charity, but Team Europe will not receive personal financial compensation.
“When I first heard about it last year, I wanted to move on with this, but it seemed like there was a good chance that it would happen,” Donald said. “I reached out to all 12 people in Rome to see how they felt. Their voices are important. No one even thought of playing for the event for the money.”

“We haven’t seen it. We understand what it represents. We have a big purpose and that is really enough for us. We understand that the money raised comes to helping European tour groups and grassroots.
“We’re going to talk a lot about this. We’re here to inspire the next generation, so this money will be a good thing. I hope it will help future Ryder Cup players become great players.
“The Ryder Cup says what these people mean. Hundreds of thousands of dollars for these people aren’t much money in the grand scheme of things. The week of the Ryder Cup week is the best week. More to them.
The Ryder Cup begins on Friday.
