Even in their current state, Manchester United struggles to welcome the best players in the world. Without Champions League football, after finishing 15th in the Premier League, the Red Devils convinced Brian M Beumo, Benjamin Sesco, Matthew Uscoonha and Senne Lammens to take part in their £2 million spending.
Manager Reuben Amorim spoke about the charm Man United still has over the summer, shooting down rumors that Kunya and Mbeumo joined the club for the money offered.
“Cunha and Bryan, they had different solutions (offers). They had Champions League offers. And they wanted to come here. People who say they’re coming here for money… that’s a lie.
It is also rare that the Red Devils rarely persuade players to join the club when Sir Alex Ferguson is in charge. United were at the top of the British football food chain at that stage, even seducing something like rival Leeds United’s Rio Ferdinand in 2002.
The iconic manager is still considered a man of influence in the club today. His opinion is undoubtedly the most respected anyone can find in Old Trafford.
The history he created is why Man United still welcomes Cunha and Mbeumo. Amorim even admitted in one of his first interviews after stepping into the technical field he wanted to have dinner with Ferguson.
He is the sleeve of Ace Upman United, in many ways, who paid dividends in so many cases. But that’s not to say that its appeal works every time. Even Premier League legends could not convince one player to join the club in 2020.
Ferguson and Cantona pleaded for man Yude Bellingham
As revealed by the great Brian Robson, both Ferguson and Eric Cantona appealed to Jude Bellingham to join Man United in 2020, but ultimately rejected the club in favor of a £25 million move to Borussia Dortmund. Given how things turned out, it’s hard to blame the midfielder for turning down the Red Devils.
“You know, I was disappointed because I met Jude when I was talking to United, Sir Alex and Eric Cantona.
“When he went to Germany, I was really disappointed, but the kids did a lot. I mean, he did it on the highest level with Real Madrid. He’s a top player.”
Since choosing Dortmund over United, Bellingham has won a move to Real Madrid and has become one of the world’s greatest midfielders. His debut season for the Spanish giants proved exactly why the people of Old Trafford all left for his signature.
The England star ended the campaign with 15 goals and 15 assists in all competitions.
