Manchester United’s struggle under Reuben Amorim led to establishing speculation about a potential successor.
In the linked names, former England manager Gareth Southgate has been repeatedly mentioned, with some reports suggesting he had direct contact with Ir Jim Ratcliffe.
However, Transfer Insider Fabrizio Romano stepped in to clarify the situation and introduced another big name in the conversation.
Man United Hierarchy knows Gareth Southgate well
Speaking on his YouTube channel, Romano explained:
“There is no positive story yet between Man United and Gareth Southgate. There are these stories because of a very good personal connection with the people of Ineos. I don’t know the discussion, but from what I’m told, Southgate could be one of the candidates if Man United decides to change manager.”
Romano added that Southgate has worshippers within the United ownership structure, but there is no guarantee.
Instead, Romano suggested that Xavi Hernández was another solid name on United’s radar.
The former Barcelona boss, who won the La Liga but endured a disappointing European campaign before being fired, is said to be closely monitoring the Premier League.
Xavi is interested in working at United
However, Zabi has also attracted interest from Saudi Arabian professional league club Al Ittihad. This means that if they decide that Amorim’s time is over, United may need to move quickly.
The Romano update cools immediate speculation about Southgate’s appointment, highlighting Xavi as a potential candidate.
For now, Amorim is in charge, but United’s poor form means that the conversation about his replacement will not go away.
Whether it’s Southgate, Zabi or any other candidate, uncertainty reflects the pressure on United to make the right decisions when trying to save the season.
