Ally McCoist says staff at the 49ers and Old Rangers conspired to make a fatal mistake

  • McCoist: 49ers and Old Gers staff made a fatal error
  • Boyd: Thelwell’s transfer business is not enough

Former Rangers manager Ally McCoist feels that the club’s new owner, staff, Russell Martin “underestimated” the size of Ibrox’s tasks before the head coach was fired.

Martin only lasted four months in charge, but paid the price of a poor start with Sunday 1-1 William Hill premiership draw and Falkirk.

The Rangers only won five of their 17 games under Martin. The Champions League exit was followed by losses in two Europa League matches against Genk and Sturm Graz.

Martin was appointed shortly after the American consortium secured a majority stake in Rangers, but the New Look board now faces another big decision.

McCoist: 49ers and Old Gers staff made a fatal error

McCoist said: “We’re looking forward to seeing you in the process of doing things like this.”

“I think the new owners and certainly old management staff probably underestimated the size of the job.

“A lot of people might look at Scottish football a bit and say, ‘The Celts and Rangers will win their game, and that’s what they’re doing, so it’s over.” But it’s much more difficult than that.

“From a recruitment perspective, I think it fits in a very poor business in the transfer market and really poor.

“It’s easy to blame the manager, and that’s where the back stops. We all know what that happens, but the players have to take part in the responsibility too.

“The goals the Rangers lost mid-week (against Sturm Graz) were incredible.

“The Rangers look like Weeboys. The Outrun Rangers in Falkirk, they remove the Rangers and it can happen from time to time, but it happens regularly. That’s not enough.

“Away games. They went to St Mirren, Motherwell, Falkirk and Livingston in Livingston.

Boyd: Thelwell’s transfer business is not enough

Another former ranger striker, Chris Boyd, thinks McCoist will expand on the main points and ask questions to someone like sports director Kevin Selwell.

“Scottish is a difficult place to play football,” Boyd told Sky Sports News.

“There are a lot of people, especially in the south. I think it’s easy, it’s not that good, and sometimes football isn’t that good, you can’t get away from it.

“But it’s a difficult place to play because both clubs in this city demand you win. When neither can win at the same time and you can’t win, you’ll be subject to enormous scrutiny.

“And the Rangers are here for now, not only because Russell Martin isn’t delivering, but there are also a lot of people out there who aren’t doing their duties within the football club.

Boyd added: “I have fingerprints from others about some of the signatures that arrived at the Rangers.

“When you think of (Youssef) Chermiti for £9 million, you need to be looking for more. You need to be looking for someone to start in and influence. You are more or less looking for a finished article, not a project.

“The Rangers recruiting, they tried to hit the jackpots with every signature, brought them in and gave them the opportunity to try them out for big money.
