  • Ross McCormack: ‘Lampard will join Rangers ‘soon”

As Ibrox officials continue their search for a new manager, a former Rangers star has told them to go find a Championship manager to join the club “immediately”.

As it stands, Steven Gerrard is at the top of the list to replace Russell Martin at Rangers. The former Aston Villa manager is reportedly set to hold talks with the 49ers this week with a view to returning to Ibrox for the first time since leaving for the Midlands in 2021.

Negotiations to return will not be easy, but Gerrard recently admitted he has “unfinished business” technically after his failures in Saudi Arabia and the Premier League.

“I would love to try again someday, change some things, improve some things and come back fresh with some different people around me.

“I’d like to try some more on this. That’s what I’m working on in the background right now. I have a few different ideas, a few different people around me.”

“Right now I’m enjoying time with my family and doing a lot of things I haven’t been able to do before. But there’s a part of me that feels like there’s still some unfinished business and I’d like to take on some more exciting challenges.”

The Rangers job is the ideal opportunity for Gerrard, who is looking for an opportunity to revive his coaching career. He has already been there and done that, winning the Scottish Premiership in 2021, and there is no doubt that the Gers need a similar transformation to the one he oversaw four years ago.

That said, he’s not everyone’s first choice. Rangers should instead target a good Championship manager, according to one former player.

Ross McCormack: ‘Lampard will join Rangers ‘soon”

Former Ibrox ace Ross McCormack named Frank Lampard when asked on the Open Goal podcast who he thought Rangers should target, insisting the Chelsea legend would leave Coventry for Gers “in a heartbeat”.

The former striker said: “If I could get him it would be Lampard because I know what he is like. I think you would leave Coventry for Rangers straight away.”

If Lampard is available, it would be hard to argue with McCormack. The Chelsea legend started his managerial career at Coventry City. Coventry City have looked unstoppable in the Championship so far this season, remaining unbeaten after nine games.

But the frustrating truth for Rangers fans is that Lampard is unlikely to abandon his current project in such a promising position. The former Coventry and Everton manager is aiming for the Premier League. Even the Rangers won’t be able to thwart that.

Instead, the 49ers may be forced to settle for another legendary England midfielder.
