Real Madrid are reportedly stepping up their pursuit of Enzo Fernandes, with the Spanish giants set to test Chelsea’s resolve for one of their most valuable midfielders.
According to Football Insider, the 24-year-old Argentina international is a priority target for Xabi Alonso’s side as they continue their long-term midfield rebuild.
The possibility of a signing is expected to depend on the player’s desire to leave, but an offer of over £100m could be enough to entice Chelsea into negotiations.
Real Madrid eye on Chelsea midfielder
With legends like Luka Modric and Toni Kroos, long-time anchors of Real Madrid’s midfield, taking time out to pursue their careers in Spain, the Spanish giants are looking for players to replace them in midfield.
Fernandes burst onto the world stage by winning the 2022 World Cup with Argentina, and has since moved to Stamford Bridge for a British record £106 million, where he is seen as a player who can anchor the Whites’ midfield for the next 10 years.
Moreover, his experience in European competitions and his international pedigree lend further weight to his profile.
However, Chelsea will be reluctant to part with one of their major contracts, especially given the size of the investment involved in acquiring him from Benfica in January 2023.
Real Madrid will have to make a huge offer
Bids above £100m may be difficult to ignore as Profitability and Sustainability Regulation (PSR) pressure continues.
The Argentine World Cup winner ticks all the boxes for Los Blancos, but it remains to be seen whether Chelsea intend to allow him to leave, and whether Fernandes himself is ready to accept a move to the Santiago Bernabéu.
Either way, Chelsea may soon face tough decisions about the future of their star-studded midfield.
