Liverpool are reportedly one of the potential transfer clubs for Borussia Dortmund centre-back Nico Schlotterbeck.
The Germany international shined during his time at Dortmund and is now attracting interest from big clubs.
According to Bild, Bayern Munich are considering signing Schlotterbeck and could lose Dayot Upamecano, whose contract expires next summer, on a free transfer.
Liverpool also have defensive concerns, as Ibrahima Konate is also set to become a free agent within a year.
As we recently reported in the Daily Briefing, there are a number of names on Liverpool’s search list for new defensive players, with Schlotterbeck now the latest target on their radar.
Liverpool linked to Nico Schlotterbeck amid contract uncertainty with Dortmund
Schlotterbeck currently has only a few days left on his contract with Dortmund, so he is likely to leave.
One would imagine that this would present a huge opportunity, as Liverpool and Bayern would likely be able to offer a much higher wage for the 25-year-old than BVB.
Still, reaching an agreement on a new contract with Konate has proven difficult for LFC, so it remains to be seen whether they will find Schlotterbeck’s demands that easy to meet.
Transfermarkt currently values Schlotterbeck at 40 million euros, but his contract with Dortmund expires in 2027.
That means by next summer, if you haven’t yet reached a new contract agreement with your current employer, your price could drop.
Liverpool will be monitoring the situation to see if they can sign a top defender to replace Konate on the cheap, and could even offer a long-term successor to the aging Virgil van Dijk.
