Liverpool are interested in signing Club Brugge defender Joel Ordonez.
According to TBR Football’s Graham Bailey, the team are considering a number of options to strengthen their defensive unit during the January period and are eyeing the 21-year-old defender. It will be interesting to see if Liverpool offer him a contract depending on their interest.
Chelsea were interested in Ordonez until a few weeks ago. We previously covered reports that Liverpool have been tracking him for months.
Liverpool focus on Joel Ordonez
Bailey said: “I think we need to look at a player like Ordonez in January, an Ecuadorian player from Bruges, a young big talent or maybe Taras Mikavko from Kiev. Liverpool are working on a number of options.”
Ordonez was widely reported to be leaving the Belgian club during the summer transfer window, but ended up staying. He is expected to leave the club soon. A move to Liverpool could be ideal for him. It will be a big step up in his career and will test him at the highest level. He will be playing with the best defenders in the world and that will help him develop further.
Virgil van Dijk could be the ideal mentor for the 21-year-old central defender.
Liverpool could use Ordonez
It is no secret that Liverpool are in need of quality central defenders, with Ibrahima Konate in particular expected to leave the club on a free transfer. The France international will become a free agent at the end of the season but has not yet signed an extension with the club. Liverpool need to start planning for a replacement and the young defender could be the ideal replacement.
The Ecuadorian player has the physical and technical characteristics to thrive in the Premier League and could be a key player for the Premier League champions. It remains to be seen whether Liverpool can make a deal. They have the resources to persuade Belgian clubs to sell players.
