After a disastrous few weeks, Liverpool have reportedly joined the race to sign the Bundesliga ace in a bid to solve their current defensive problems.
Klopp does not rule out a return to Liverpool
After four consecutive defeats, the last thing Arne Slott wanted to do was admit that the Liverpool legend could one day return to the club. But that’s exactly what manager Jurgen Klopp handed Stephen Bartlett when he spoke to him on the Diary of a CEO podcast. The German, who has never been more outspoken, could not rule out a return to Anfield.
“I said I would never coach another team in England, so if I were to come back it would be Liverpool. So in theory it’s possible.”
Having said that, Klopp also watched the Dutchman win Premier League glory in his first season at the club and took the time to heap praise on Slott.
The Liverpool legend said: “I tried to make it as easy as possible for the players coming after me. We had a lot of contact after I left. He’s a very good guy and he brought the best out of the team.”
Only he knows whether Slott will seek advice from Klopp in the face of Liverpool’s current problems, but there is no denying that a solution needs to come from somewhere.
Manchester United were the team who benefited the most on Sunday, with the Reds once again vulnerable after Sunday’s off, with Harry Maguire’s late goal sealing a fourth straight defeat for the Premier League champions.
After spending millions in the summer and breaking transfer records twice, Liverpool’s weaknesses are clear for all to see and Michael Edwards will have to return to the transfer market in January in search of a solution.
Liverpool enter race to sign Diogo Leite
As reported by Milan Live, Liverpool have joined the race to sign Diogo Leite from Union Berlin in 2026. The Portuguese defender is reportedly available for just €5 million next year, and as a result has attracted interest from Anfield officials as well as AC Milan and Wolverhampton Wanderers.
It’s no surprise that Liverpool are in the race for a central defender. Currently, Virgil van Dijk, Ibrahima Konate and Joe Gomez are the only senior centre-backs available in the slot, but fans will remember that his arrival from Charlton in 2015 cost a similar fee of just £3.5m.
Marc Guehy is officially set to leave Crystal Palace as a free agent in the summer, but there is no guarantee that Liverpool will win the race to sign him in such circumstances. In fact, it might be better to target someone like Leite.
Described as “fantastic” by scout Jacek Kulig during his time at Porto, Leite represents the kind of bargain deal Edwards first became known for at Anfield. Now he can get back to doing what he does best to get the Reds back on track.
