Greg McElroy won the 2010 BCS National Championship as quarterback for the Alabama Crimson Tide. He then played a few seasons in the NFL before hanging up his cleats.

Currently, McElroy is one of ESPN’s top college football commentators and color analysts. He also has a 4.7 handicap and dreams of getting even better. McElroy was a guest on the latest episode of GOLF substandard He appeared on the podcast to discuss his golf game and goals with co-hosts Colt Knost and Drew Stoltz.

Like many elite athletes, McElroy has moments when he believes he can be good at golf. But like many people, the game quickly humbles him.

“There are moments where you think, ‘Maybe I can be good,'” McElroy said. “And then you immediately remember where you pulled hooked something or three-putted something or missed it off the green and you think, ‘I’ll never be that good.’ I have a desire in my heart right now to be a plus-handicap, but I think I’m probably at a point where I can be as good as I’ve ever been. I don’t think I’ll ever get there — I’m too stubborn. But I’d like to make that goal happen someday.”

McElroy now trains with top swing coach Mark Blackburn, and the renowned instructor admitted he understands the former signal-caller’s simplistic view of the game.

“He’s going to be like, ‘Load Greg on the club, fire him,'” McElroy said. “And I’m like, ‘I don’t know what that means.’ And he’s like, ’45, 46 degrees, Greg.’ Just like Mark, let him swing as hard as he can. And now he’s finally reached the point where now this guy has no idea what he’s doing. He’s going to swing hard. He’ll be very picky about it. He’s strong, so we’ll figure it out. He’s got some speed, but we probably don’t know where it’s going to go. So when it comes to clubface control, it’s hugely overrated in my opinion. Just watch the ball and hit the ball. That’s all about it. “
