  • Blues want to keep core of team together

Chelsea are reportedly in talks with right-back Maro Gusto over a new long-term contract that would extend his stay at Stamford Bridge beyond 2030.

According to RMC Sport, the west London club are preparing to reward the French defender with improved terms following his growing influence within Enzo Maresca’s squad.

Despite a mixed reaction from some sections of the fan base since his arrival from Lyon in 2023, Chelsea see Gusto as an important part of their long-term defensive project and are keen to secure his future amid ongoing team development and a contract renewal.

Gusto has recently been linked with a move to Juventus, and the Blues are also reported to be willing to allow him to leave.

The 22-year-old has had a rocky start to the Premier League since arriving in London.

Despite this, there is strong belief within Chelsea’s management in Gusto’s long-term potential and suitability to the club’s style of play.

The Frenchman’s adaptation off the pitch is also going smoothly, helped by the increasing number of French-speaking players at the club.

Team-mates such as Benoit Badiashil and Wesley Fofana helped him adjust to life in London, creating a strong sense of community and familiarity.

The Blues are now willing to extend his contract for another year or two, while also offering him a significant wage increase. This approach mirrors Chelsea’s recent moves to reward players such as Cole Palmer and Nicholas Jackson, both of whom were handed improved terms in 2024, despite still having long-term contracts.

Similarly, Moises Caicedo is understood to be the next candidate to receive a pay rise as part of Chelsea’s efforts to retain a core group of motivated and committed young talent.

The decision to extend Gusto’s contract shows Chelsea’s confidence in his development and ability to challenge long-term first choice right-back Reece James.
