Crystal Palace midfielder Jefferson Lerma has repeatedly been mentioned in South American transfer talks, with Vasco da Gama repeatedly linked as a possible destination.

But new reports from Brazil and Colombia suggest the reality is much more complex than early whispers suggested.

Although the Rio de Janeiro club praises Lerma’s pedigree, the financial and sporting conditions required to complete the deal appear formidable, casting doubt on his imminent transfer.

Jefferson Lerma no closer to leaving Crystal Palace

Brazilian journalist Jorge Nicola poured cold water on the story, saying on his YouTube channel that a transfer is unrealistic at this stage.

Lerma demands a hefty salary and his contract with Crystal Palace runs until June 2027. This means that whatever approach is taken, there will need to be not only a competitive wage package, but also a remuneration that will entice Palace into negotiations.

On the pitch, Lerma had a mixed season. He has played 14 games in all competitions for Palace, registering neither a goal nor an assist, but his role has changed under manager Oliver Glasner.

The Colombian player is not only used as a ball-winning number six, but is also used deep at times, and in some games as a third centre-back.

This tactical tweak speaks to Lerma’s versatility and positional intelligence, but has raised concerns among observers who see his optimal position as a traditional screening midfielder.

These concerns are reportedly shared within the Colombian national team structure. El Tiempo journalist Gabriel Merc reports that staff are concerned that Lerma’s continued lack of playing time in his preferred midfield role could dull his sharpness ahead of the 2026 World Cup.

According to Merck, there was even informal advice for Lerma to consider a transfer that would allow him to maintain both his form and rhythm for major international matches and play regularly in his natural position.

However, there is a severe tension between the national team’s priorities and the club’s realities. Palace value Lerma’s adaptability and Premier League know-how. Using him as a stabilizing presence in a back-three variation could be the difference between control and chaos in close games.

For now, Vasco da Gama’s move is more speculation than plan, constrained by contract length and salary as much as by Crystal Palace’s tactical needs.
