  • Lucas Paqueta wants to leave West Ham United
  • Manchester United are not currently targeting Paqueta

Transfer official Fabrizio Romano has provided an important update on Manchester United’s acquisition of West Ham United midfielder Lucas Paqueta, addressing recent speculation surrounding the Brazilian’s future ahead of the January transfer window.

Reports have emerged in recent days linking the West Ham United playmaker with a move to Old Trafford.

Since joining West Ham from Olympique Lyon in the summer of 2022, Paqueta has established himself as one of the Premier League’s most technically gifted midfielders.

The 28-year-old has started every game for the Hammers this season and has shown his influence in the team, scoring three goals in 10 games across all competitions.

Lucas Paqueta wants to leave West Ham United

With the 2026 FIFA World Cup approaching, the Brazilian is said to be keen on a move that would improve his chances of securing a regular place in Carlo Ancelotti’s Brazil squad.

This sparked rumors of him moving to Man United next year. His current contract runs until 2027, but if the midfielder pushes through with a move, West Ham could be forced to consider an offer next year.

Romano revealed the current situation on his YouTube channel, saying:

“There may be a possibility that Paqueta could leave West Ham if the right opportunity presents itself in January. So that’s a concrete possibility so keep an eye on it. But at the moment I’m not aware of any concrete negotiations that have taken place between Manchester United and West Ham or with Paqueta’s camp.”

Romano also stressed that while Paqueta fits the profile of a player United need, financial constraints could complicate a potential move.

“Paqueta could be a very interesting player in terms of role and qualities.” he added. “But financially, West Ham are not going to let him go cheaply.”

Man United’s priority in January remains a defensive midfielder, with Paqueta’s attacking profile seen as a secondary target heading into the summer.

Nevertheless, his name continues to be circulated within Old Trafford as part of the club’s long-term recruitment strategy under Amorim, who reportedly admires the Brazilian’s versatility and work-rate.

Meanwhile, Manchester City, who came close to signing Paqueta last summer before the gambling allegations surfaced, are also monitoring his situation closely.

West Ham are confident of keeping the playmaker at least until the end of the season. However, as Romano hinted, Paqueta’s ambitions and growing list of fans mean his future could be away from the Hammers.
