Newcastle United are reportedly keeping a close eye on Atalanta midfielder Ederson, with the Brazilian emerging as a potential long-term replacement for Joelinton, the i Paper reports.

The 26-year-old has impressed in Serie A and on the international stage, and his name was also mentioned at a recent recruitment meeting at St James’ Park as the club begins to make plans for its future.

Joelinton has become a mainstay in Eddie Howe’s system since converting from a forward to a midfield powerhouse, but has struggled with repeated injury problems over the past year.

His absence highlights Newcastle’s growing need for depth in the middle of the park, with the club’s scouting department considering potential replacements should his fitness concerns persist.

Ederson has emerged as one of Atalanta’s most consistent performers in recent seasons. The Brazilian midfielder helped the Italian team win the Europa League in 2024.

Since joining the Bergamo club from Salernitana in 2022, he has developed into a complete box-to-box midfielder, combining defensive solidity with attacking contribution.

His performance has also attracted attention from the Brazilian national team. Ederson made his international debut in September 2024 and has since won three caps, establishing himself as a strong option for the Selecao’s next generation of midfielders.

Interest from Newcastle is still exploratory, but sources say the club’s recruitment team are impressed with Ederson’s physical profile and work rate.

However, according to Football Italia, Italian reports put the midfielder’s worth at around 60 million euros, making it unlikely that Atalanta would sell him cheaply.

For now, Newcastle are weighing their options, but given the club’s ambitions to remain competitive both domestically and in Europe, Ederson fits the mold of a player who could strengthen the team for years to come.

Whether a move becomes official in 2026 will depend largely on Joelinton’s fitness record and performance.
