Liverpool could undergo a major defensive overhaul in 2026, with reports suggesting Ibrahima Konate is open to leaving Anfield on a free transfer next summer.
According to TEAMtalk, the French defender has attracted significant interest from Bayern Munich and Juventus, with Real Madrid also monitoring his situation closely.
Konate, 26, has been a key part of Liverpool’s backline since joining from RB Leipzig in 2021 for around £36m.
However, the defender is yet to sign a new contract at Anfield and his long-term future at the club is uncertain.
Ibrahima Konate is scheduled to become a free agent in 2026
The French defender is set to become a free agent next summer, sparking interest in his services from some of the world’s top clubs.
There are doubts about the centre-back’s form this season. In the recent defeat against Manchester City, Konate was also responsible for Erling Haaland’s goal at the Etihad Stadium.
Defenders were unable to mark the Norwegian attacker, who scored a superb header against Arne Slott’s side.
Sources close to the club say Konate is considering a “new challenge” after five seasons at Liverpool, with several of Europe’s top clubs in particular promising him a new role as a defensive leader.
But Liverpool have no intention of giving up without a fight. The Reds are reportedly preparing to begin negotiations over a short-term contract extension in a bid to protect their investment and prevent the defender from leaving for free in June.
Club sources have suggested Konate’s representatives have been approached about a deal to keep him at Anfield until at least 2027, but the player’s camp has yet to give a definitive response.
Liverpool may need to sign Guehi for Konate
Mr Slott is said to be a big fan of Mr Konate and considers him an integral part of his long-term plans. But the Dutchman also understands that his players want a new challenge.
Real Madrid’s interest, although more tentative, adds a new layer to the story. The Spanish giants are scouting elite centre-backs and Konate has caught their attention. According to reports, the Frenchman is seen as an “ideal addition” to the squad.
Konate’s departure could increase Liverpool’s interest in Crystal Palace defender Marc Göch, who was close to joining the Merseyside club in this summer’s transfer window.
Guehi is experiencing a similar situation to Konate. The England international is set to become a free agent next year.
Liverpool’s centre-back situation will be closely watched next year as the Reds could make some big changes in that department.
