In six weeks’ time, Liverpool may be unable to prevent Ibrahima Konate from leaving Anfield as a free agent. The powerful defender is out of contract at the end of the season but has been linked with a number of top clubs across Europe, particularly Real Madrid.
Liverpool are seeking to avoid a repeat of the Trent Alexander-Arnold situation of 12 months ago and are aware that time is running out in their efforts to sign Konate to a new deal. This is why they played the final move in this long-running story.
Liverpool finalize contract with Ibrahima Konate
According to Sky Sports, Manager Sasha Tavolieri has confirmed that Liverpool made a final contract offer to Ibrahima Konate, but it was exclusively scrapped by CaughtOffside a few days ago.
“This is the last offer. At Liverpool, the situation with Ibrahima Konate is clear. The offer currently on the table will be the last one put forward by the Reds, who believe that they are very generous to the Frenchman, who has approached Real Madrid many times in recent months… and is still playing with the rock of the French team.
“If Konate accepts the terms proposed, he will become one of the highest-paid players in Arne Slott’s team. This shows our complete confidence in him. The Frenchman has a choice now more than ever: accept what he has, or wait to get what he has always wanted: the chance to play for the merengue.”
Should Liverpool shell out big bucks to keep Konate?
There is no doubt that Konate has been disappointing this season, but at the peak of his ability, he is one of the best central defenders in the Premier League. It makes sense for Liverpool to push hard to avoid losing him, especially if he is not eligible for a transfer fee.
