Mavericks Defeat Slips Away as Knicks Overturn Brandon Williams’ Thrilling Game-Tying Layup with Controversial Foul Call

On Wednesday night, Brandon Williams believed he had secured overtime for the Mavericks, but a controversial offensive foul call late in the game overturned that hope. Driving down the court, Williams skillfully bypassed Knicks guard Landry Shamet and made a challenging layup with just 0.7 seconds left at American Airlines Center. This basket would have tied the game, possibly leading to overtime.

However, the referees called an offensive foul on Williams, despite him seemingly getting past Shamet cleanly, nullifying the basket and handing the Knicks a 113-111 victory. The Mavericks and Williams were left in disbelief.

Throughout the fourth quarter, the Knicks had multiple opportunities to seal the game but struggled with free throws, converting only one of six in the final 22 seconds. P.J. Washington narrowed the gap with two free throws around six seconds remaining, followed by Jalen Brunson splitting his free throws after a quick foul, putting New York ahead by two points. This setup gave Dallas a chance to tie with a layup instead of needing a three-pointer.

Mavericks coach Jason Kidd praised the team’s execution on the final play, highlighted by a precise pass to Derek Lively and then to Williams on the run, calling the foul call a tough break. Brunson, returning from an ankle injury absence, led New York with 28 points on 11-of-23 shooting and five assists. Karl-Anthony Towns added a double-double with 18 points and 14 rebounds, while Josh Hart contributed 16 points and 10 rebounds off the bench.

The Knicks boosted their record to 9-5 with this win, marking their second victory in three games. They will face the Orlando Magic on Saturday in the second game of a five-game road trip.

For Dallas, D’Angelo Russell led with 23 points and seven assists. The Mavericks played without top draft pick Cooper Flagg, who was sidelined due to illness. Naji Marshall scored 23 points off the bench, while Williams tallied nine points but struggled with shooting, going 2-for-11 from the field.

With this loss, the Mavericks fell to 4-12 this season, suffering their fifth defeat in six games, with four of those losses decided by single digits. They will play the New Orleans Pelicans next Friday.

Fan Take: This game highlights how crucial and controversial officiating can be in determining the outcome of tightly contested matches. For basketball fans, it underscores the drama and unpredictability of the sport, reminding us that every call and play has immense impact on team fortunes and the thrill of the game.
