UFC 321 Spotlight: Cyrill Gane Faces a Make-or-Break Moment to Clear the Air on Fight Misconceptions

In the lead-up to the UFC 321 main event, much attention was focused on Tom Aspinall as he defended the undisputed heavyweight title against former interim champion Cyril Gane in Abu Dhabi. Aspinall, holding a 15-3 record, missed the opportunity to unify the heavyweight belt with Jon Jones after Jones vacated and declined to face him. Now champion, Aspinall faces the challenge of proving himself as the division’s next big star despite limited testing of his ground skills and durability. Despite having never gone beyond two rounds in 18 fights, Aspinall is favored 4-1 entering his first five-round title defense.

However, Cyril Gane, with a 13-2 record, insists that pressure affects both fighters, acknowledging the heightened scrutiny that comes with holding a belt. Jones’s brief retirement and title vacancy in June highlighted the lack of depth in the heavyweight division, explaining why Jones avoided Aspinall and caused division stagnation. For Gane, the absence of a clear contender has provided a crucial third opportunity to claim the heavyweight title, although many question whether he truly deserves it.

Gane’s path to the top has been rapid and unusual. Starting MMA training in 2018 after a Muay Thai background, he quickly ascended, debuting in the UFC after just three pro fights and impressing with his size and speed. He secured the interim heavyweight title in 2021 by defeating Derrick Lewis. However, subsequent setbacks, including a loss to Francis Ngannou and a tough defeat by Jon Jones in 2023, raised doubts about his potential. Gane has acknowledged his late start in MMA and the learning curve that comes with it.

Despite these challenges, Gane recovered with emphatic wins over Sergei Spivac and a contentious split decision against Alexander Volkov, even though many—including UFC President Dana White—disagreed with the judges. A leg injury during the Volkov fight left Gane frustrated despite his win. Knowing another loss would likely end his title hopes, Gane aims to silence critics who question his ground game, emphasizing he has more wins than losses when the fight hits the mat.

While some think Gane should evade Aspinall’s striking power and stretch the fight to later rounds, Gane insists he can fight aggressively from the start or endure a full five rounds. Athletic and experienced in team sports like soccer and basketball, Gane remains a physically gifted competitor capable of evolving despite his setbacks. This fight may be his last chance at the heavyweight crown, and he’s ready both mentally and physically to seize it.

Gane views a victory as a milestone that will help him appreciate his journey and the lessons learned, especially from the disappointment against Jon Jones. Fully prepared, Gane believes he is truly ready to prove himself as a top-tier champion in the heavyweight division.

Fan Take: This showdown between Aspinall and Gane is pivotal for heavyweight MMA—a division often criticized for its lack of depth and star power. Fans will witness whether Aspinall can solidify his reign or if Gane will rise to reclaim glory, which could redefine the heavyweight landscape and invigorate the sport with fresh rivalries and competition.
