NWSL Gear Up to Battle: USL Super League Aims to Secure Trinity Rodman’s Commitment to Stay in Europe!

NWSL Commissioner Jessica Berman announced that the league will actively work to keep Trinity Rodman amid rising interest from various teams, as her contract with the Washington Spirit is set to expire following the NWSL Championship this Saturday. Rodman’s current deal lasts until the end of the 2025 season, but her future remains unclear; reports indicate that several English Women’s Super League clubs and USL Super League’s DC Power are interested in signing her.

While the Spirit are still in the running to retain her, other clubs can likely offer better salaries due to the NWSL’s salary cap, which will remain capped at $3.3 million in 2026 and gradually rise to $5.1 million by 2030. Berman addressed concerns about the current financial structure during a press conference, emphasizing the league’s dedication to keeping top talent like Rodman in the NWSL.

She believes the league has more to offer than just pay, citing interests in competition, club culture, and coaching as key factors for players. Berman noted the positive feedback she receives from players about these aspects, indicating that many value the overall experience in the NWSL beyond just their salaries.

The salary cap is expected to increase as part of the collective bargaining agreement ratified in 2024, allowing for potential raises, although immediate changes to the cap weren’t implied. Berman stressed that the NWSL operates as a business, and any financial investments must align with revenue, supporting improvements in facilities and player compensation.

Should Rodman leave the NWSL for Europe, she would join other USWNT players moving overseas, gaining significant media attention. However, a move to a USL Super League team may not offer the same level of resources that NWSL clubs can provide, indicating a different developmental path for players.

Fan Take: This news is crucial for soccer enthusiasts, as Rodman’s potential departure could impact the balance of talent in U.S. women’s soccer. Keeping her in the NWSL not only strengthens the league but also highlights its commitment to supporting top-tier talent, which could help elevate the sport’s profile domestically and internationally.
