Van Gisbergen Triumphs at Roval; Chastain, Redick, Wallace, and Cindric Exit NASCAR Playoffs

Shane Van Gisbergen secured his fifth victory of the season at the Charlotte Roval, while Ross Chastain, Tyler Reddick, Bubba Wallace, and Austin Cindric were eliminated from the NASCAR Cup Series Playoffs. Although Van Gisbergen couldn’t dominate the race as he had on other road courses this year, he won by a significant margin after challengers Christopher Bell and Kyle Larson pitted late hoping for a caution.

The most intense moment unfolded over the final playoff spot in the semifinal round between Chastain and Joey Logano. Logano’s team opted for a tire change, hoping he could gain enough track position to stay ahead of Chastain in points. Their strategy paid off, barely.

In a dramatic final lap, Chastain was overtaken by Denny Hamlin, which allowed Logano to advance. Chastain then attempted a risky move on Hamlin in the last corner, resulting in both spinning out, but Logano managed to fend off Chastain to cross the finish line first. Hamlin was already safely through to the third playoff round, unthreatened by the battle behind him.

Chastain’s troubles began when he missed the pit road turnoff at the end of the first stage and compounded later by a misstep on pit road involving the wrong gear and speeding. Despite these errors, Chastain believed he had a chance to advance but admitted his mistakes were “unacceptable.” He explained that during his pit exit he pulled the shifter twice and failed to turn the wheel properly, which cost him crucial positions.

Last year, Logano famously advanced to the third round even after being provisionally ousted, due to a post-race disqualification of Alex Bowman for a weight violation. This twist helped Logano return to the playoffs and ultimately win his third championship.

If Logano’s pattern of winning championships in even years continues—he claimed titles in 2018, 2022, and 2024—then 2025 might not see him as a title contender. However, with just one win in the next three races, he could secure another shot at the championship in Phoenix this November.

Logano will join Hamlin, Chase Elliott, Ryan Blaney, Chase Brisco, Kyle Larson, Christopher Bell, and William Byron in the NASCAR Playoffs semifinal round. Any one of these eight drivers can secure a spot in the final four by winning at Las Vegas, Talladega, or Martinsville ahead of the title race on November 2 in Phoenix.

Fan Take: This race was a thrilling reminder of how every decision and split-second move can change the fate of a championship. For NASCAR fans, the high-stakes drama keeps the playoffs unpredictable and exciting, promising intense battles as drivers fight for a coveted spot in the final round.
