Newcastle United are likely to gain a significant advantage in competition with clubs like Manchester United for Nottingham Forest midfielder Elliott Anderson, according to reports.

Anderson is a former Newcastle youngster who, according to journalist Ben Jacobs, did not want to leave St James’ Park.

As reported in today’s Daily Briefing, Anderson is a top target for Man United, who feel a deal could be struck for somewhere between £60m and £70m.

However, while the England international may want to return to Newcastle, Jacobs said on the United Stand podcast that Ross Wilson’s move from Forest to Newcastle as sporting director could also help make this move happen, as quoted by Geordie Boot Boys.

Why Newcastle have an advantage in the race to sign Elliott Anderson

Jacobs spoke out about Anderson’s transfer turmoil and made it clear that Newcastle should not be ruled out because of his links with his former club.

The same reporter said, “Please don’t underestimate Newcastle by talking about Elliott Anderson.”

“What people don’t understand about the Anderson deal… this is a player who was at Newcastle from start to finish. He didn’t want to leave Newcastle United. He was forced to leave because of PSR. He didn’t want to leave Newcastle United. He was forced to leave because of PSR.”

“What happened was that Liverpool agreed to sign Anthony Gordon, but Jarrell Quansah went the other way.

“Then, at the last minute, Yankuba Minte moved to Brighton, Forest replaced Elliott Anderson, and Newcastle were able to back out of their contract with Gordon.

“Anderson’s love for Newcastle has not gone away, he has previous links with Newcastle.

“Now Newcastle sporting director Ross Wilson has signed a deal to bring him to Nottingham Forest.

“From Newcastle’s point of view, if Elliott Anderson is available for value, they would still be open to re-signing him despite the fact that they have Joelinton, Bruno Guimarães and Sandro Tonali.”

Newcastle could be an attractive project for Elliott Anderson

Anderson is hoping to play regularly at his next club, which could also give Newcastle an advantage over some of the more established big six clubs.

The 23-year-old will no doubt be given a key role in Eddie Howe’s side, helping to continue their impressive progress in recent years.

NUFC won the Carabao Cup last season, winning their first trophy in 56 years and once again qualifying for the Champions League.

Why wouldn’t a talented young talent like Anderson want to be involved in such a project?
