Julio Cesar Chavez Dominates Rival, Threatens to Send Him Back to Mexico in a Coffin with His Best Performance Yet

Some boxing enthusiasts regard this day in 1987 as when the legendary Julio Cesar Chavez was at his absolute peak.

Though Julio Cesar Chavez Jr. experienced challenges, living up to the legendary status of his father has always been a tough act. Chavez Sr. still holds remarkable boxing records, including the most title defenses and the longest undefeated streak. Before suffering his initial defeats to fighters like Oscar De La Hoya and Frankie Randall, Chavez Sr. had built an extraordinary winning record.

On November 21, 1987, Chavez Sr. made the critical error of doubting his opponent’s legitimacy before stepping into the ring. After earning a perfect 56-0 record and establishing dominance in the super featherweight class, he sought new challenges. He announced that his final fight at super featherweight would be against Danilo Cabrera and planned to move up to lightweight.

In Las Vegas, Chavez faced Edwin Rosario, the WBA lightweight champion and The Ring’s top-ranked lightweight. Despite being labeled the underdog, Chavez faced verbal taunts from Rosario, who doubted the quality of Chavez’s opponents and ominously threatened to send him home “in a coffin.” However, Chavez decisively dominated the match, landing 61% of his punches compared to Rosario’s 36%. Bloodied but resilient, Rosario’s corner stopped the fight in the 11th round, marking a career highlight for Chavez.

Chavez then went on to defeat other leading contenders like Rodolfo Aguilar and Rafael Limon and won the WBC lightweight title by unanimous decision over Jose Luis Ramirez after an accidental headbutt caused a cut to Ramirez. After an impressive run as lightweight champion, Chavez moved up to light welterweight, where he continued his career.

It exemplifies the spirit of boxing—where legends are built by rising to greater challenges—and continues to inspire both fighters and fans in the sport.
