Trainer Chris Gordon and his jockey son Freddie enjoyed a remarkable day at Haydock, highlighted by an extraordinary treble at odds of 462-1. A standout moment was Electric Mason’s win in the Betfair Stayers Handicap Hurdle at 17-2, narrowly holding off a strong finish from the lightweight competitor Hartington, ridden by champion jockey Sean Bowen.

Freddie Gordon’s trio of wins has earned him the removal of his claiming allowance, officially elevating his status. Chris Gordon expressed his gratitude to his team, praising Electric Mason for his determination and loyalty. Though one owner suggested aiming for the Stayers’ Hurdle, Gordon felt the horse might be getting too excited for that stage. He described the day as exceptionally special, especially as it marked his son’s final ride as a claimer, calling it the best day he’s ever experienced.

Looking ahead, Gordon is optimistic about Diamond Hunter, who upset the field in the Betfair-sponsored Newton Novice Hurdle. The six-year-old, brought over from Ireland, is seen as a promising future chaser. Gordon noted that at six years old, the horse was mature enough to take on this challenge, unlike younger horses that might start in smaller races. The success was somewhat unexpected but very welcome, with plans to focus on chasing next season.

David’s Well also impressed by overcoming a long break to win the Bet at Your Best with Betfair Handicap Chase despite strong competition from Escape and Devade. Returning after 11 months off, the horse showed excellent form at 11-4 odds, finishing a length and a half ahead. Gordon mentioned that softer ground conditions suit David’s Well well and hinted at future races at Sandown and Castleford.

Gordon’s attempt at a fourth win in the Betfair Racing Podcast Handicap Hurdle was thwarted when Andashan was outpaced by Cabral de Massin, trained by Dan Skelton. Skelton’s horse won by a dominant 12 lengths over the favored runner. Skelton was hopeful following a strong recent performance, seeing promise in the horse’s stamina and progress. Plans include aiming for races at Cheltenham and potentially competing in the Stayers Hurdle, with optimism about the horse moving beyond handicap races.

Fan Take: This remarkable day at Haydock showcases emerging talent and the excitement of underdog victories, reminding fans why horse racing remains unpredictable and thrilling. Chris Gordon’s success story with his son Freddie and their horses highlights the deep passion and dedication fueling the future of the sport.
