Harvey Barnes is considering the option of changing his international allegiance from England to Scotland. The Newcastle United winger received one cap for England back in 2020 but remains eligible to play for Steve Clarke’s Scottish squad due to his Scottish ancestry. His sole appearance for England came during a friendly match against Wales, allowing him to join the Scottish team according to FIFA regulations.

Barnes’ Interest in Scotland

The 27-year-old has shown increasing interest in Scottish football lately, which has prompted Clarke to initiate talks with him early in his managerial role. Although Barnes has had a fruitful career since his international debut, he struggled to secure a position in the teams managed by Gareth Southgate and Thomas Tuchel. He has represented England 14 times at youth levels, with his only senior appearance being a brief stint against Wales in October 2020.

With Scotland qualifying for the World Cup for the first time in 28 years, the prospect of switching allegiances has gained traction for Barnes. He admitted that he hasn’t considered it deeply but is open to playing for the Tartan Army.

A Possible Shift?

Earlier this week, while speaking to Sky Sports, Barnes was asked whether he had dismissed the idea of changing his international affiliation. He responded, “No, no, of course it’s not off the table. I’m currently playing for England, and while I’m still eligible, there haven’t been any serious discussions or advancements on that front.”

This ambiguous response may not encourage Scotland manager Clarke to reach out again. Clarke previously mentioned having conversations with Barnes about his eligibility but hasn’t connected with him recently, stating, “The next call won’t be from me.”

Potential Historical Move for Barnes

If Barnes chooses to switch from playing for England at Wembley to representing Scotland at Hampden, he would become the first male player to make that transition after earning a senior cap for England. Former Everton and Manchester City goalkeeper Sandy McIver was selected to represent Scotland after a friendly appearance for England but has been the only recent case of such a switch.

Barnes’ Impact on Scotland

Scottish football is currently buzzing after a remarkable 4-2 victory over Denmark, which secured their place in the next summer’s World Cup. Competing for positions in the squad will be intense, as players aim for a coveted chance to represent their nation on a global stage.

Wingers played a crucial role in the recent qualifying victory, with standout performances from players like Ben Gannon-Doak and Kyle MacLean. Although captain John McGinn typically occupies the left flank, limiting Barnes’ starting opportunities, his consistent performance in the Premier League since debuting with Leicester City could make him an attractive addition. This season, the Newcastle winger has scored four goals and provided two assists in limited appearances, and the Scottish FA may pursue him once more as they aim for success in North America.

Fan Take: This news is significant for soccer fans as it highlights the ongoing fluidity in international player eligibility, which can profoundly influence national team dynamics. If Barnes makes the switch, it could invigorate the Scottish lineup, adding a Premier League talent just in time for a World Cup appearance, creating new excitement for supporters.
