Liverpool faced a disappointing defeat, losing 3-0 to Nottingham Forest at Anfield on Saturday, marking their sixth loss in the Premier League.

The visitors took an early lead thanks to Murillo’s clever touch and finish from a corner by Elliott Anderson, despite claims that Alisson’s view wasn’t obstructed by Dan Ndoye’s positioning.

Nottingham Forest striker Igor Jesus saw a goal disallowed for handball shortly after, but it was the first real attempt from the home side to regain momentum. Things deteriorated further for Liverpool right after the half, as Nicolò Savona scored following poor defensive work in the penalty area.

Substitutions of Hugo Ekitike and Federico Chiesa failed to spark a turnaround for a disorganized Liverpool, as Sean Dyche’s side effectively utilized counter-attacks. Eventually, Morgan Gibbs-White netted from a cross that slipped past Alisson, sealing the match for the visitors.

This loss signifies the first time Liverpool has suffered consecutive 3-0 defeats in league play since 1965.

Positive

While it’s tough to find many positives after this match, right-back Dominik Szoboszlai showed promise and could step up as a reliable option in the absence of injured players Jeremy Frimpong and Conor Bradley.

Negative

Liverpool struggled against Nottingham Forest’s physical play, were weak on set pieces and second balls, and couldn’t create meaningful chances, as demonstrated by Alexis Mac Allister’s blocked shot. Additionally, Ibrahima Konate’s defensive struggles continued, along with Alexander Isaac’s poor form.

Manager Evaluation (out of 10)

Arne Slott, 4 — The Dutch manager’s tactical changes failed to make an impact on the game.

Player Ratings (1-10, with 10 being the best; players introduced after the 70-minute mark won’t receive a rating)

GK Alisson, 5 — The Brazilian goalkeeper was inadequately supported by his defense upon his return, with little he could have done to prevent the goals conceded.

DF Milos Kerkes, 4 — The Hungarian international didn’t effectively contribute offensively down the flanks and sometimes hindered Gakpo’s movements, creating difficulties in advancing the play.

DF Virgil van Dijk, 5 — The Liverpool captain was less influential than usual, struggling to keep track of Igor Jesus during key moments.

DF Ibrahima Konate, 3 — Konate had a challenging time dealing with Igor Jesus and appeared hesitant on basic defensive duties like clearances. He was substituted out in the 55th minute after a forgettable display.

DF Dominik Szoboszlai, 6 — Szoboszlai delivered a commendable performance, with a left-footed shot that seemed likely to score before being blocked. He effectively moved the ball into the final third, partnering well with Jones and Salah while dodging Forest’s press.

MF Ryan Gravenbirch, 6 — The 23-year-old attempted to steer the game positively but was forced deeper with Ekitike’s introduction, diminishing his effectiveness.

MF Alexis Mac Allister, 6 — Mac Allister had Liverpool’s best chance of the first half, but a determined block from Andersson denied him. Neco Williams then capitalized on defensive frailties to net Forest’s second goal.

MF Curtis Jones, 6 — Jones had some positive links with Szoboszlai, maintaining pressure on Forest’s defense. However, Liverpool’s midfield often faltered in transition when moving the ball forward.

FW Kodi Gakpo, 6 — Gakpo stood out in the first half, creating chances and combining well with teammates, but ultimately could not prevent Savona from scoring Forest’s second goal.

FW Alexander Isaac, 3 — Liverpool’s record signing had a brief moment of promise but became largely invisible, leading to his substitution in the 68th minute.

FW Mohamed Salah, 5 — The veteran winger frequently attempted to break through his marker but lacked precision in his final touches and shot attempts, leading to a subdued performance.

Substitutes

Hugo Ekitike (Kuny, 55 min), — Liverpool looked out of sync with Ekitike, who struggled to penetrate a resolute Forest defense.

Federico Chiesa (Isaac, 68 min), 5 — Chiesa attempted to adjust his movements for crosses, but he found little space to operate in. Forest comfortably dealt with the incoming threats.

Andrew Robertson (Kerkes, 68 min), 5 — Coming on in the 68th minute, Robertson was unable to close in on Gibbs-White before Forest’s third goal.

Rio Ngmoja (Jones, 78′), N/R — Ngmoja was brought on as Liverpool lost the game 3-0, witnessing their disappointing exit.

Fan Take: This defeat highlights a significant crisis for Liverpool, one that soccer fans are closely watching as it raises questions about the team’s future direction. The challenges faced may reshape their approach, impacting rival teams and the overall competitive landscape in the Premier League.
