Initially, Norris was second and Piastri fourth, but Max Verstappen wins He narrowed the gap to Norris to 42 points. However, after a post-race machine inspection, FIA technical representative Joe Bauer identified problems with both McLarens.
“The rearmost skid was measured on both cars in accordance with the legality documentation submitted by the team in accordance with TD039 M, item 1.2 b) i),” Bauer’s report states.
“The measured thickness is less than 9 mm for both cars, which is the minimum thickness required by TR clause 3.5.9 e).”
The matter has been referred to the stewards and the normal penalty for breaching technical regulations is disqualification.
If the McLarens are disqualified, Verstappen will join Piastri and move within 24 points of championship leader Norris heading into the final two races of the season in Qatar and Abu Dhabi, which are sprint weekends.
