In a thrilling renewal of the John Durcan Memorial Punchestown Chase, Gaelic Warrior emerged victorious after a fierce battle with stablemate Fact to File. Fact to File, the 11-8 favorite, was aiming to defend his title in the 2.5-mile Grade 1 race but was narrowly bested by Gaelic Warrior, who was the 13-8 second favorite and making his first appearance since his spring victory in the Oaksey Chase at Sandown.

From the start, Gaelic Warrior and jockey Paul Townend took control, taking a strong lead and maintaining it, while Fact to File, guided by Mark Walsh, stayed close behind as the main challenger. Other contenders like the previous winner Fast Throw and Cheltenham Gold Cup champion Inoseway Yurushinkin failed to keep up, leaving the two front-runners to duel in the final stretch. Fact to File briefly led approaching the last fence and looked poised to win, but Gaelic Warrior drew on his stamina in the closing yards to claim victory by a neck.

Trainer Willie Mullins described the race as tough and expressed regret for the narrow loss. He praised both horses’ efforts, noting that Gaelic Warrior found extra energy when it mattered most. Townend remarked that Gaelic Warrior was energetic from early on and that he conserved enough energy to push through in the final moments.

Looking ahead, Gaelic Warrior is the 6-4 favorite for the prestigious King George VI Chase at Kempton on Boxing Day, with Fact to File at 11-2. Mullins hinted at potential targets including the King George and the Savills Chase at Leopardstown, but final plans will depend on their recovery post-race.
