When golfers think about bounce, they usually think about wedges. But the same principles that govern where you hit the ball, launch, and interaction with the turf with a 56-degree wedge apply equally well to a 6-iron.

Typical wedge fitting includes checking the player’s angle of attack (AoA) and divot pattern. While being aware of the client’s general playing situation, my main focus is to help move the strike closer to the desired location.

More bounce moves the strike further down the blade, lowering the launch of the shot. Conversely, less bounce resides higher on the blade, producing a higher launch shot. How you hit your wedge will affect the bounce you choose.

The purpose of this article is to explain that iron sole width and bounce should be considered with the same level of care as wedges when fitting.

When players need less bounce on their irons

I’ll start with the most common example I see. Client A is an excellent golfer. He hits the 6-iron very shallow and creates a left spin axis with a good hit.

This client plays a set of irons that include a thick sole and a 6-iron with 26 degrees of loft. He wonders why even his best iron shots have very shallow land angles and less than optimal spin.

This player uses a high-bounce iron set and probably has 23 degrees of loft on the face where he hits regularly. Client A has a shallow swinger with shallow ball draw, causing the club to bounce on many shots and stick out the bottom of the blade, causing unwanted low iron shots.

One of the first things I want to try with this client is an iron head with less bounce and more loft. Remember the opening paragraph? Less bounce moves the strike above the blade, producing a higher firing shot. Client A could use a set of irons that hit higher in the middle of the face. Combined with a higher lofted set, your iron shots should land softer in no time.

Careful awareness of iron bounce is a more immediate concern for good players, but should not be ignored as a factor in forgiveness for less skilled players or those who swing the golf club fairly steeply.

When players need more momentum from their irons

My second example is one that I see every week in my role as a master fitter at True Spec Golf. Client B has been playing for several years but has never taken formal golf lessons. He came to this match after playing another sport extensively. Some of the habits from his previous efforts are completely gone in his golf swing.

Client B hits his 6-iron in a way that produces a low fade under the best of circumstances. He uses a set of golf clubs recommended to him by a friend when he started playing golf. The iron is a beautiful muscle back that can cause the best ball strikers to get stuck in the grass.

Client B has little hope of hitting a shot that reflects the speed of the clubhead because of his sudden ball strike. Client B has good clubhead speed, but the high strike of the blade takes away a lot of distance, and worse, control.

After discussing how club bounce affects impact location, we begin testing with stronger loft sets that feature more bounce. In the process of cleaning up his contact, we witnessed a significant increase in ball speed and more penetrating flight. This client can enjoy more forgiveness in all aspects by choosing an iron set with the right amount of bounce for his golf swing.

I recognize that there are many factors that affect impact location on the face. Some have to do with the swing, others with the club. Understanding the role of bounce at impact location is one of the factors to keep in mind when choosing your next set of irons.
