Jadon Sancho’s uncertain future has taken another turn, with the Daily Mirror reporting that the winger will have to cut his £300,000-a-week salary in half if he wants to return to Borussia Dortmund.
The 25-year-old is currently on loan at Aston Villa but has been underperforming for Birmingham, making just four Premier League appearances since joining in the summer.
Sancho’s move to Villa was aimed at rekindling a career that had been in the doldrums since moving from Dortmund to Manchester United for £73 million in 2021.
But his struggle with form and fitness continues. United allowed him to join Aston Villa on loan in the summer, but the English winger has struggled to revive his career.
Jadon Sancho told to lower wage demands
Borussia Dortmund are now interested in re-signing him and he has been told to reduce his wage demands.
Dortmund remain interested in a return to Germany, where Sancho enjoyed his best football between 2017 and 2021.
The Bundesliga side believe he could rediscover his spark upon his return, but only if he accepts a significant pay cut.
Dortmund’s current financial model does not allow the player to earn anything close to Sancho’s current salary at Old Trafford.
Sancho ready for Bundesliga return
Meanwhile, Sancho himself is thought to be open to the idea of returning to familiar surroundings if it guarantees him regular playing time.
A reunion with Dortmund could be beneficial for both parties, giving Sancho a fresh start and Dortmund a proven creative outlet to challenge Bayern Munich and Bayer Leverkusen for domestic honors.
However, talks could stall again unless the England winger makes a significant financial sacrifice.
Sancho has a chance to revive his career as Manchester United intend to allow the player to leave permanently next year.
