Minnesota United has advanced to the Western Conference semifinals after a thrilling match that will be remembered in MLS playoff history. The Loons triumphed over the Seattle Sounders with a final score of 3(7)-3(6) in Game 3 of their best-of-three series.

Minnesota’s goalkeeper, Dane St. Clair, recently honored as MLS Keeper of the Year, showcased his skill with a remarkable performance, making nine saves during the match and securing the decisive stop in the penalty shootout that clinched victory for his team.

To appreciate the significance of this match, it’s essential to recount the high-stakes drama featuring six goals, 20 penalties, red cards, and numerous comebacks.

After winning Game 2 with a score of 4-2, the Sounders started strong, with Albert Rusnak scoring in the fifth minute followed by Danny Musovski adding another goal just three minutes later.

Minnesota fought back in the 19th minute when Joaquin Pereira scored from a direct free kick. However, disaster struck when Joseph Rosales received a straight red card just before halftime for headbutting Seattle forward Jesus Ferreira during a skirmish.

Nevertheless, Minnesota regrouped after halftime, and in the 62nd minute, Jefferson Diaz netted a short-handed goal, followed by Anthony Markanich’s goal in the 71st minute, giving the Loons the lead.

Just when it seemed Minnesota might secure the win, Seattle’s Jordan Morris scored an equalizer in the 88th minute off a corner kick, keeping the Sounders in contention.

According to MLS playoff rules, games that end in a tie after regulation go directly to a penalty shootout. Seattle made a strategic move by substituting starting goalkeeper Stephen Fry for penalty specialist Andrew Thomas late in the match.

The shootout began on a positive note for Seattle as Pereira missed his penalty kick. However, Thomas injured his left hand while trying to save a shot, leading to a medical timeout as staff wrapped his fingers.

The shootout saw both teams convert their penalties until Morris hit the crossbar, keeping the score deadlocked. Thomas, despite his injury, made several saves, giving Seattle opportunities to win, but they squandered two attempts, first when Obed Vargas’s shot hit the post and then with Osaze de Rosario’s shot saved by St. Clair.

When the shootout reached 20 kicks, it was time for the goalies to take their turns. St. Clair scored, putting the Loons ahead once more.

With the game on the line, Thomas’s penalty hit the crossbar, sealing Minnesota’s victory.

This loss is a tough blow for Seattle, a historically successful team that has struggled in recent seasons but was poised to make a strong playoff push.

Minnesota, now looking to avenge their defeat to Seattle in the 2020 Western Conference Finals, aims to advance to the quarterfinals for only the third time in their history.

The Loons are set to face either San Diego FC or the Portland Timbers in Game 3 of Round 1 on Monday, pitting the top and bottom seeds against each other.

Fan Take: This thrilling match underscores the intensity of MLS playoffs and showcases the dramatic potential of soccer in the United States. For fans, it emphasizes the unpredictability of the tournament, sparking excitement and anticipation for future matches.
