Manchester United are keen to sign a new midfielder and could be eyeing a star player who Sir Alex Ferguson once likened to David Beckham.

The Red Devils are looking to move up the Premier League table under manager Ruben Amorim and are hoping they can attack the festive schedule now that the international break is over, even if they have to overcome injuries and absences along the way.

Benjamin Sesco is set to miss out, with the former Sporting boss confirming his summer striker contract is due to return around the same time as Brian Mbeumo, Amad Diallo and Nousair Mazraoui leave for the African Cup of Nations.

Asked about his possible return, the player said: “He’s going to be out for a few weeks. I don’t know how long, but it’s not too serious. We have to keep an eye on him. He’s on the mend, he’s feeling better, so we’ll have Ben in the next few weeks.”

“I think it will happen more or less at the same time. I don’t want to say for sure, but I think Ben will be back by the time they go to camp.”

Manchester United’s goals have been spread out this season, but there’s always reason to add more expertise in front of the target to take the pressure off the strikers, especially since Mbeumo’s summer move from Brentford, which he has brought to the club.

With the transfer window fast approaching, Amorim and INEOS will likely draw up a list of targets and be ready throughout January or even into the summer.

The Red Devils are now hoping to secure his signature ahead of high-profile suitors.

Now they have added a surprise name to their shortlist for the man, who is a popular figure among supporters, and news that he could move to Manchester will no doubt make headlines.

Manchester United eyeing surprise return for Scott McTominay

According to CaughtOffside, Manchester United are eyeing a surprise return for Napoli midfielder Scott McTominay, who has also attracted interest from Arsenal due to his performances for club and country.

His resurgence in his career since leaving Old Trafford has attracted attention, with the Scotland international scoring 17 goals and providing eight assists in 51 appearances for the reigning Serie A champions.

Of course, McTominay’s exploits with the Tartans have also garnered worldwide attention, especially after his incredible overhead kick helped his country beat Denmark and reach the World Cup final.

Happily in Italy, Napoli are thought to have priced the 28-year-old at £60 million, with a move in the summer of 2026 looking the most likely outcome unless something else happens.

Manchester United have been on the market for a midfielder to add to their existing option pool, but it would be surprising to see them sign a former academy star with strong links to the club. His growth has been compared by manager Ferguson to Beckham at Old Trafford.
