Richard Childress Contemplates Legal Response to NASCAR President’s Recent Statement

Richard Childress Racing (RCR) announced on Monday that it is “considering legal action” following offensive remarks about team owner Richard Childress made by NASCAR executives in unsealed text messages. These messages surfaced amid an ongoing lawsuit involving 23XI Racing and Front Row Motorsports against NASCAR sanctioning bodies. RCR expressed deep disappointment over the disrespectful and insensitive comments exchanged between NASCAR’s Steve Phelps and Brian Herbst, highlighting a longstanding perception of unfair treatment toward dedicated team owners like Childress, who is well-regarded by fans for his hardworking and humble nature. The team and Childress are currently consulting with lawyers and will not be commenting further on the defamatory messages.

In a 2023 message, NASCAR Commissioner Steve Phelps referred to Childress with derogatory terms such as “stupid redneck” and suggested that Childress “needs to be brought back and flogged,” criticizing his financial ties to NASCAR. Phelps also disparaged Childress’ commitment to the sport and dismissively advised him to sell his charter if dissatisfied. This hostility reportedly began after Childress publicly criticized NASCAR’s charter negotiations and the new TV deal’s benefits. Additionally, RCR has faced multiple penalties this season, including disqualification from playoffs and point deductions linked to aggressive incidents involving their drivers. NASCAR officials later privately informed Childress about the upcoming release of these texts, though details of their conversation were not disclosed.

Fan Take: This controversy shines a harsh light on internal tensions within NASCAR’s leadership and its treatment of team owners, which could impact the sport’s unity and reputation. For fans, it raises important questions about respect, fairness, and transparency in NASCAR’s governance, potentially influencing how the sport is perceived and supported in the future.
