Islam Makhachev Eliminates Top Contender from First-Round Welterweight Title Shot Chase

Islam Makhachev is facing a new group of challengers after moving up to welterweight. Following his triumph at UFC 322 on November 15, which crowned him the new welterweight champion, Makhachev has reclaimed his spot at the top of the pound-for-pound rankings, a view shared by Bloody Elbow readers. His success in the headline fight has sparked calls from multiple fighters who believe they deserve the next title shot.

Responding to Ian Machado Garry’s victory at UFC Qatar, Makhachev mentioned that the UFC will likely determine his next opponent within the next few weeks. However, he also noted in a recent interview that one contender on the list, Shavkat Rakhmonov, is currently ineligible for a title fight due to an extended injury hiatus.

Rakhmonov, who hasn’t competed in 2025 due to a serious injury, is expected to return in early 2026. Despite being the top contender after defeating Garry in December, Rakhmonov missed the opportunity for a title shot then, leading Garry to feel he deserves to challenge Makhachev next. Makhachev disagrees, emphasizing that a fighter coming off a long injury break isn’t ready for a championship bout immediately.

In addition to Garry, fighters Michael Morales and Carlos Prates have also earned significant wins recently, making them potential contenders. Yet, Makhachev has identified Kamaru Usman as his preferred opponent for his first title defense, confidently predicting Usman would defeat Morales and Prates. He respects the UFC’s matchmaking decisions and is prepared to face whoever is chosen next.

Fan Take: This development is exciting for fight fans as it shakes up the welterweight landscape with new rivalries and compelling matchups. Makhachev’s choice to face seasoned champion Kamaru Usman could lead to a blockbuster title defense that elevates the division and draws widespread attention in the sport.
