Anzadam Set to Take on Newcastle Following ‘Outstanding Performance’

Anzadam’s team is hopeful that his unbeaten streak will extend with a strong performance in the BetMGM Fighting Fifth Hurdle in Newcastle this Saturday, which will help clarify his position among the top two-mile hurdlers. The French horse had an impressive start with two Grade 3 wins under Willie Mullins in Ireland, the latest being the Limestone Lad Hurdle at Naas in late January.

However, this weekend’s race at Gosforth Park presents a greater challenge, as Anzadam will face tough competition, including the former champion Constitution Hill, who also maintains an unbeaten record. Patrick Mullins, assistant to the trainer, expressed optimism but cautioned about the difficulty of Anzadam’s first run abroad, stating the race will be a genuine test.

With the injury ruling out Statesman for the season, much of the attention turns to Lossiemouth, who showed strong form with a commanding win in the Morgiana Hurdle at Punchestown. Betting odds from Paddy Power list Gray as the favorite for Cheltenham in March, followed by New Lion, Constitution Hill, and Anzadam, all poised to contend for the title after this crucial trial.

Reflecting on recent performances, Mullins praised Rossie Mouse’s comeback, highlighting her relentless drive and hoping for a Christmas appearance at Leopardstown. Meanwhile, the John Durcan Memorial Punchestown Chase saw a thrilling finish with Gaelic Warrior narrowly defeating stablemate Fact to File, a race Mullins called one of the best he’s ever witnessed.

Gaelic Warrior is now the clear favorite for the King George VI Chase at Kempton on Boxing Day, raising the possibility of a rematch against Fact to File. Mullins indicated that King George is likely the next target for Gaelic Warrior, with Gallopin des Champs expected to head to Leopardstown, setting the stage for an exciting clash at Kempton.

Fan Take: This lineup of formidable contenders, including Anzadam’s international debut and Gaelic Warrior’s dominance, signals an electrifying season ahead for two-mile hurdle and chase racing. For horse racing fans, these high-stakes matchups promise thrilling competition and will be pivotal in shaping the sport’s future stars.
