Lulamba Sets Sights on Grade 1 Triumph at Sandown

Nicky Henderson is eager to see Lulamba compete in the Betfair Henry VIII Novice Chase after the horse fell on his debut but later showed signs of being unwell. The four-year-old, a highly talented hurdler who placed second in last season’s Triumph and won the Champion 4-Year-Old Hurdle at Punchestown, took on his first major chase challenge at Exeter earlier this month.

Although Lulamba’s 10-length win included a slight drawback due to four fences being skipped, Henderson was impressed with the horse’s condition at Seven Barrows and is considering heading to Sandown for the Grade 1 Henry VIII on December 6. Henderson explained that it was hard to assess the debut performance since not enough fences were included, but Lulamba was settling in well before encountering an unusual situation where a low sun left a stretch without fences. Despite hitting three horses in a row, Lulamba’s run was smooth and promising.

Henderson praised Lulamba’s remarkable personality and resilience, noting that despite suggestions to rest him after his successful return last year, the horse showed such vitality they even thought about racing him at Aintree. Lulamba’s spirited nature and ability to bounce back have prompted Henderson to likely aim for Sandown next weekend for the Henry VIII, where his jumping skills will be properly tested. Since Exeter didn’t fully challenge his jumping, Henderson is steering him toward the Novice Chase route rather than focusing on the Champion Hurdle.

Fan Take: This update is exciting for horse racing enthusiasts as it highlights the emergence of a talented young contender with the potential to shine in major chase races. Lulamba’s progress and Henderson’s strategic choices could add thrilling competition and fresh narratives to the sport this season.
