Pittsburgh Penguins forward Vir Koivunen has been sidelined for 11 days since his last game. He participated in the first NHL Global Series match against the Nashville Predators in Sweden but sustained a lower-body injury, leading to his placement on injured reserve with a weekly designation.

This week, Koivunen returned to practice and was skating on the third line alongside Tristan Broz and Tommy Novak on Tuesday. If cleared to play in Wednesday’s game against the Buffalo Sabres, Koivunen is eager to team up with Broz again, recalling their time as teammates at Wilkes-Barre/Scranton last season and briefly this year.

Koivunen expressed his enjoyment in playing with Broz, praising him as a skilled player capable of winning puck battles. Although Koivunen has yet to score his first NHL goal, he has had several good opportunities, including hitting multiple posts. His confidence grew following his return from Wilkes-Barre/Scranton before his injury.

Now, Koivunen aims to help the Penguins break their slump, as the team has lost seven of their last nine games and currently sits outside playoff contention heading into Wednesday’s matchup.

Fan Take: Koivunen’s return is a beacon of hope for Penguins fans craving a spark in a tough season. Watching a young player fight to find his footing in the NHL adds an exciting narrative to the sport, reminding us of the resilience and determination that hockey demands.
