Boxing Legend’s Attempt to Extend Iconic 36-Round Trilogy Halted by Security Intervention

Erik Morales and Marco Antonio Barrera needed to be separated following their third and final encounter.

The iconic Mexican fighters first faced off in February 2000 for the WBO super bantamweight title. Morales won by a contentious decision, and their bout is remembered as one of boxing’s all-time great matches.

Barrera got his revenge in June 2002. Though knocked down by a body shot, it was ruled a slip, and he went on to claim a unanimous decision win, a result many believed should have favored Morales.

The tension was at its peak when the legendary trilogy concluded in November 2004, with the stakes higher than ever.

The third match was for the WBC super featherweight title but symbolized much more—bitter rivals fighting for lifelong pride. After a brutal 12-round battle, later named the 2004 Fight of the Year by Ring Magazine, Barrera won by majority decision with scores of 115-113, 115-114, and 114-114.

The fight was still ongoing when the winner was announced, leading to a heated exchange between the fighters. Security had to step in to prevent a physical altercation before declaring Barrera the winner. Barrera celebrated by taunting Morales with two fingers in his face as he was hoisted by his team.

A decade later, Barrera showed respect for Morales, calling him his toughest opponent in 2014. Despite Manny Pacquiao famously knocking Barrera out, Barrera said Morales was more challenging because he was unfazed by punches and constantly pressured him with powerful hits.

Fan Take: This legendary trilogy between Morales and Barrera not only shaped the careers of two of boxing’s greats but also set a standard for fierce, respectful rivalry in the sport. Their battles continue to inspire fighters and fans alike, reminding us of the passion and drama that make boxing such a beloved sport.
