Jorge Lorenzo Draws Exciting Parallels Between Rocky’s Grit and Maverick Vinales’ Style

Three-time MotoGP world champion Jorge Lorenzo has drawn a parallel between his new collaboration with Maverick Viñales and the iconic relationship of Rocky Balboa and Apollo Creed from the “Rocky” film series. Lorenzo recently revealed that he will serve as a rider coach for Viñales in the upcoming 2026 MotoGP season.

Lorenzo retired from professional racing at the close of 2019, with Viñales stepping into Yamaha’s lineup before moving to Ducati in 2017. On his podcast, “Life Goes On,” Lorenzo detailed his ambitions as Viñales’ coach, expressing hope to support Viñales in achieving race wins and frequent podium finishes, though he remains uncertain if Viñales will become a world champion. Living in Dubai limits his ability to attend every race, but he emphasizes the importance of early season testing for technical development.

Their partnership first came up when Viñales was still with Aprilia, but it didn’t materialize at that time. Lorenzo likens their new relationship to the dynamic between Rocky and Apollo Creed, highlighting the combination of sport, life, and motivation. He explained that while Viñales doesn’t lack determination, like Rocky needing Apollo’s coaching to regain his fighting spirit in the films, their relationship also embodies the competitive drive to prove doubters wrong.

Lorenzo ended with a light-hearted remark on critics’ skepticism, saying, “Some say this partnership will last only a few days, but I’m confident the ‘beast’ will prove them wrong.”

Fan Take: This pairing excites racing fans because it blends the experience of a legendary champion with the raw talent of a current top rider, promising a fresh dynamic in the MotoGP paddock. Lorenzo’s guidance could rejuvenate Viñales’ career, potentially raising the level of competition and bringing more thrilling races to the sport.
