Barcelona manager Hansi Flick has urged Lamine Yamal to move on from his altercation with Marc Cucurella during Tuesday’s defeat to Chelsea and concentrate on the upcoming home matches against Alaves and Atletico Madrid.

Yamal, 18, kept a low profile during Barça’s 3-0 Champions League loss at Stamford Bridge, where Chelsea’s goalkeeper, Roberto Sanchez, claimed Cucurella had outperformed his international teammate. Flick substituted Yamal in the 80th minute, and while Yamal seemed disappointed by the decision, the manager downplayed his reaction and encouraged him to channel his focus into the next games.

“Lamine is feeling good,” Flick stated in a press conference ahead of Saturday’s La Liga match against Alaves at Spotify Camp Nou. “Many players aren’t pleased when they get taken off; I know how that feels, but emotions are part of the game.”

Flick praised Cucurella, calling him one of the best left-backs globally and acknowledged the challenges in playing against him. He insisted that Yamal must rise to the occasion, emphasizing, “Let’s forget about that game. Alaves is our priority now, and he needs to perform at his peak.”

Yamal has been in excellent form this season, contributing six goals and seven assists in 13 matches, but he wasn’t the only player struggling in the Chelsea game. The team faced criticism for its defensive tactics, leaving them 18th in the Champions League standings after conceding three goals and having three others ruled out.

Flick expressed discontent with the Chelsea result but remained optimistic. In response to critics of his tactical choices, he remarked, “It’s easy to judge after a loss, but I know how we want to play. It’s not just about the defenders; everyone needs to press effectively.”

He encouraged a positive mindset, acknowledging that while the defeat was discouraging, the team has shown promise in training. With players like Pedri returning from injury and a renewed focus, Flick believes in a strong rebound.

Barcelona can reclaim the top spot in La Liga, even if temporarily, with a victory over Alaves ahead of Real Madrid’s match against Girona this weekend. Following that, they will prepare for a crucial league match against Atletico Madrid, who are currently on a six-game winning streak in all competitions.
